PhotoCraft ArtCraft: Open-Source Photoshop Alternative
PhotoCraft is ArtCraft's open-source image editor, built in Rust around Photoshop-style workflows; this unofficial guide explains where to get it and what to check before relying on it.
What is PhotoCraft?
PhotoCraft belongs to the ArtCraft software family. Its repository describes a clean-room implementation of Photoshop-style image editing written in Rust. The project is in early alpha, so the useful question is not whether its interface looks familiar, but whether the particular editing job you need is dependable. Its stated platform scope covers macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and WebAssembly. Layered PSD and PSB input and output are part of its scope, but that does not promise perfect interchange with every Photoshop document. These are project descriptions rather than results of testing by this guide. Source: PhotoCraft README.
Start with a copy of a document rather than your only working file. Choose a small task you can judge: opening an image, selecting a region, adding a layer, changing a mask, and exporting a result. Keep the original untouched and compare the result against your usual editor. A successful launch tells you that the application starts on your machine; it does not tell you that your fonts, color handling, adjustment layers, or delivery format will survive a full production workflow.
For a layered file, make a checklist before you begin. Which elements must remain editable? Which effects can be flattened? Which dimensions and colors must stay unchanged? Open the saved copy in the application that will receive the file, not just the application that produced it. If an important element changes, record the smallest example that shows the problem. That gives you a practical reason to continue experimenting, wait for a later release, or keep using another editor for that job.
An open-source editor can be interesting without being ready to replace an established tool. Students might explore its interface, developers might inspect its code, and curious users might try isolated edits. Someone delivering paid work should set a higher bar: repeatable results, recoverable files, and confidence in the receiving workflow. Treat the current release as something to evaluate, not a shortcut around that evaluation. This page separates upstream claims from review observations, gives direct source links, and keeps downloads with their maintainers instead of offering a mirror.
Who makes it?
The README credits the ArtCraft team, and the repository is hosted by the storytold organization. Brandon Thomas identifies himself as ArtCraft's founder on his GitHub profile; that attribution comes from his profile, not a named-author claim in the README. Read the ArtCraft and Brandon Thomas guide for the app list and dated milestones.

The same release also supplies SHA256SUMS.txt, AppImage update metadata, and source archives. Choose the architecture and format appropriate for your system; the presence of a package is not a compatibility test on your hardware. Review the maintainer's instructions before running a download.
For a source build, the upstream README supplies the following command. It is shown for reference and was not executed for this guide:
cargo run --release -p photocraft -- image.psdStatus & limitations
- Early alpha: the README warns against treating it as a daily professional replacement; unfinished areas include typography, plugins, and generative AI.
- PSD interchange: the current README distinguishes a standalone parser's unchanged-file round trips from files re-saved through the editor. Editor saves are not generally byte-identical. Do not read a round-trip claim as a guarantee for your document.
- AI credits: OMG! Ubuntu's review describes paid ArtCraft subscription credits for generative features, while noting those features were not included in PhotoCraft at the time of its review. This does not establish a working credit-based AI feature in v0.7.0.
- Memory observation: that review reports memory growing to about 5 GB after opening a PSD in its tested v0.3.0 build. It is a reviewer's observation, not a v0.7.0 benchmark or a measurement by this site.
FAQ
Is this site affiliated with ArtCraft or Adobe?
No. It is an unofficial guide, not affiliated with either organization. See About this guide.
Is PhotoCraft the same thing as ArtCraft?
No. PhotoCraft is the image editor; ArtCraft is the broader app family shown on the ArtCraft apps page.
Where should I download it?
Use the maintainer's releases or PhotoCraft product page. No downloads are mirrored here.
Can it replace Photoshop for client work now?
Do not assume so: its README labels it early alpha. Validate your exact work and keep a fallback editor.
Is the source open for reuse?
The repository offers MIT or Apache-2.0 licensing. That statement does not grant trademark rights.
How is VectorCraft different?
VectorCraft targets Illustrator-style vector illustration rather than Photoshop-style image editing. Compare their separate repositories and test tasks in the PhotoCraft versus VectorCraft guide.
